Christmas Day went better than expected. I visited dads grave with Mum in the morning where we both had tears. The flowers from the funeral had all died and the soil level had dropped at one end causing a muddy puddle to appear, it looked a sorry state which did not help my emotions. The though of dad being in the cold wet ground is not a pleasant one.
After the graveside visit it was back to mine where we cooked, ate and played games. My kids could not join us due to the Covid restrictions so it was my mum, girlfriend and I. That said I think, all things considered, we made it the best it could have been.
Since Dads death I have wanted to use this event to kickstart change. I have been frustration of my lack of motivation as to why nothing had happened. Yesterday it dawned on me, I have no idea what change I wanted to make, I had no plan. Without goals and targets I had nothing to get motivated about.
Today I have made a start on a 6 year plan, not the traditional 5 or 10 year version. The main reason I chose 6 is that that is how long my degree course is, it made sense to me! In the lull between Christmas and New Years I have had time to think. I have kind of just bumbled my way along through life and ended up where I am through luck and chance, not through the execution of a well thought out plan. If I allow this to continue then I need to be prepared to just accept what I end up with. If I don’t make the time and effort to set goals and map the path to get there then I am saying to myself I am prepared to fail, prepared to not be fulfilled.
The plan is simple, health, wealth, work, kickboxing and education. No doubt a few more will be added along with an idea of how to achieve the goals. Hopefully this will bring the motivation that has been missing.
Today we find out the latest round of Tier restrictions in the UK, this will in turn tell me the latest impact to the Kickboxing clubs. The martial arts community has been hit hard amongst so many others. Online classes are run but attendance is far below that of face-to-face classes. It’s a constant battle to get students online and then to motivate them to stay. We are forced to hold on to the hope that there is a mass of pent up desire to get back to the mats for existing students and to try something new for those who have been restricted for so long. Nothing beats the sound of a room full of students hitting pads as they learn and perfect their art.
